Overview
We have two great Sri Lanka trips in the program. Since Sri Lanka is under the influence of the two monsoons Yala (southwest monsoon) and Maha Northeast Monsoon), Sri Lanka can be traveled all year round – only in certain regions. If it is rainy on the west coast through the southwest monsoon, the east coast has a dry climate. Therefore, we have two multi-active Sri Lanka trips in the program. This one for the summer months from May to October and one for the winter months from November to April.
These trips are designed as private trips (but can also be organized as group trips) in which you can explore the island in the vehicle and with your own driver/guide (German-speaking possible). We have incorporated as many active elements as possible such as sightseeing bike tours, hikes, snorkeling, safaris and also a cooking course.
The journeys are a harmonious mixture of culture, nature, recreation and movement.
The trips are, of course, flexible program suggestions that can be adapted to your wishes.
Here is a little article about Sri Lanka by Sarah.

Branded as a sacred city among the devoted Buddhists, the city is one of the most evocative sights in South East Asia. It is speckled with high rising white dagobas and stupas, all proud creations of the great monarchs that used to rule the land. Among the many fascinating ancient ruins are huge b fell-shaped stupas built of small sun-dried bricks, temples, sculptures, palaces, and ancient drinking-water reservoirs. Statues of Lord Buddha stand as evidence of the country’s religious affiliations since the past. Each monument carries its own significant tale, a story worth knowing and remembering The frequent religious ceremonies that draw in throngs of devotees give Anuradhapura a vibrancy which makes the onlookers nostalgic for the days gone by. The giant lion paws at the summit lead to the top of the cairn, a palace in the sky. As you step between the lion paws, imagine yourself entering the wide-open mouth of a lion, the carving hewed out of the face of Sigiriya, no more to be seen after so many centuries. The palace soon became a courtly paradise of elegant pavilions set amid gardens and pools. To this day the most advanced technological apparatus and scientists are left baffled by the mechanics behind the hydraulic systems of the ponds at the water gardens still functioning perfectly. Could it be a valve through the interior of the rock or an act of God? The mystery still remains. The climb to the top could be weary but the sight it offers is worth the sweat. Acres and acres of greenery and the clear blue sky above you will be breathtaking! If you wish not to climb to the very top, the gardens and ponds at the summit of the rocky boulder would offer a satisfying sight as well. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resembles the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning Mist-laden Mountain Range. The higher mountain area is often robed in thick layers of cloud. In addition to its aesthetic value, the range is of great scientific interest. It is a climatic microcosm of the rest of Sri Lanka as the conditions of all the climatic zones in the country are exhibited in the massif At higher elevations there is a series of isolated cloud forests, harboring a variety of flora and fauna. Although the range constitutes approximately 0.03% of the island’s total area, it is home to a significantly higher proportion of the country’s biodiversity. Further Information
Sri Lanka
We welcome you to the beautiful island Sri Lanka. The proud history of the island of over 2500 years and the breathtaking variety of landscapes will conquer your heart and soul like no other destination. May the time you spend on the island be filled with exciting experiences.
What will impress you most about Sri Lanka is the amazing variety of landscapes. It is possible to explore bright green rice fields, sun-tanned beaches, destroyed towns, small lively villages, near-desert regions, wildlife reserves in tropical jungles and tea plantations in the hills literally within a few hours.
Ancient Sanskrit literature refers to Sri Lanka as “Singhalesian” – the island of The Sinhalese. The people with this name have inhabited this island since the earliest history. Traditions recorded in Sri Lanka’s historical chronicles go back to the exiled North Indian prince Vijay and his entourage, who settled on the island in the 6th century. The Sinhalese kingdom was founded.
However, the oldest known civilization dates back to 380 BC, when Anuradhapura (205 km from Colombo) was founded as its first capital. After the advent of Buddhism in the 3rd century BC, a civilization rich in Indo-Aric culture developed. It produced the big cities with their “dagabas”, which compare the pyramids of the Egyptian palaces and amusement gardens, the rich art and architecture and the gigantic irrigation works, many of which are still in use today.
With the invasion from neighboring southern India, the power base shifted to Polonnaruwa (101 km southeast of Anuradhapura) and to other cities such as Dambadeniya, Kurunegala, Kotte and Kandy. In the 16th century, with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, the island had its first known encounter with the merchants and colonial masters of the West. This was followed by a period of almost 500 years during which the island came under the control and influence of the colonial rulers Portuguese, Dutch and British. While the Portuguese and Dutch ruled the coastal regions for about 150 years, the British established complete control of the island with the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815. They, too, ruled for 150 years before the country became independent again in 1948. The effects of many cultures over the centuries have led to the rich diversity of the country’s culture, of which many testimonies are present today. The island’s economy is traditionally based on agriculture with rice as its main food. Spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, clove, nutmeg and pepper have been exported since time immemorial, as have precious stones and even peacocks and elephants. With Western commercial influence, Rice gave way to money harvesting until the British made tea the foundation of the economy. The new boost in the economy lies in exports to the export-oriented industry. Agriculture is now being revived. Non-traditional exports of clothing, seafood, foliage, cut flowers and tropical fish, as well as the value-adding agribusiness, have contributed to Sri Lanka’s economic progress in recent years.
The people of Sri Lanka have different races and religions. The majority are Sinhalese, who are Buddhists, while among the minorities the Tamils, mainly Hindus, are the largest, followed by the Moors who follow Islam and a sharply decreasing number of citizens descended from the Portuguese and Dutch, Christians are a considerable number of Christians among the Sinhalese and Tamils.
Although the country and its people are well on the way to modernization, they value most of their tradition and are proud of their rich culture. One aspect that continues to attract visitors from abroad is the beauty and diversity of the landscape as well as the warmth and hospitality of the people.
