It is June- ideal trekking and hiking time in the Kullu Valley: During the day it is warm and sunny, slowly the snow melts on the peaks, the mountain flowers are in full bloom and the shepardmen move with their herds higher into the mountains.
I, too, am drawn to the mountains. Every day from my office in Old Manali I have a wonderful view of the snow capped mountains shining in the sun and I have the longing desire to get closer to them, to get out of Old Manali.
Last Friday I had one of those days where I just had to get out. I felt the call of the mountains and could not resist it.
And I was lucky:a befriended mountain guide was in a similar mood and we decided to go on a day hike unknown to us.
It was a beautiful day through deep forests, over green meadows and high up to the 3200 meter high Dangan Kot summit with a great 360° view of the surrounding peaks.
Once upon a time, a small castle was supposed to have stood up here and while the lateral slopes from the summit are relatively steep and one prefers not to slide down the rocky slopes, otherwise one ends up a thousand meters deeper in the Manalsu river, the summit is flat and even has a small hollow.
I was totally surprised to have such a beautiful walkable mountain in the immediate vicinity of Old Manali. After a few hours downhill we were back in Old Manali. All in all a wonderful beautiful day tour with good physical load and great views!
