Program
Day 1 – Arrival in Colombo & drive to Chilaw – Tropical prelude
After your arrival at Colombo Airport (Bandaranaike International Airport), you will be met and driven along the palm-fringed west coast to Chilaw.
The trip gives you your first impressions of island life: small temples, colorful houses, fishing boats.
Chilaw is a quiet coastal town known for its relaxed atmosphere and endless beaches.

Day 2 – Chilaw → Kalpitiya – Lagoon landscape & fishing life
Your first stage takes you along the coast towards the Kalpitiya peninsula, one of Sri Lanka’s most pristine regions.
You drive past salt fields, mangroves and lagoons – a paradise for birdwatching. Traditional fishing villages characterize the picture.

Day 3 – Kalpitiya → Wilpattu – Nature & first wilderness
Today you leave the coast and head inland towards Wilpattu National Park.
The landscape becomes drier, characterized by scrubland and small villages. Time and again you will come across water buffaloes and farmers in the fields.
Cycling distance: approx. 60 km
Profile: flat to slightly hilly
Special feature: quiet roads, little traffic
In the afternoon, optional jeep safari in Sri Lanka’s oldest national park – known for leopards and its natural, less touristy atmosphere.

Day 4 – Wilpattu → Anuradhapura – Journey into the past
Today your route takes you to the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka: Anuradhapura, one of the oldest cities in the world.
On the way, you cycle through rural areas with lakes (“tanks”) that have sustained life for centuries.
Cycling distance: approx. 70 km
Profile: flat, long, even stage
In the afternoon, you will explore the impressive stupas and temples – including the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree.

Day 5 – Anuradhapura → Sigiriya – Villages & rice fields
A particularly authentic stage awaits you: You drive through small villages, past rice fields and water reservoirs towards Sigiriya.

Day 6 – Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa – Culture by bike

You will then drive through the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in Asia.

Day 7 – Sigiriya → Knuckles region – transition to the highlands
Today, the landscape is changing significantly. You drive towards the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
The route becomes more challenging, with the first longer climbs.

Day 8 – Knuckles → Kandy – Culture & History
You drive downhill towards Kandy, the last royal city in Sri Lanka.
The route offers fantastic views before you immerse yourself in the lively city.

Visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth.

Day 9 – Kandy → Nuwara Eliya – Tea Mountains & Fresh Air
One of the most beautiful, but also more challenging stages.
You drive through endless tea plantations into the highlands to Nuwara Eliya.

Day 10 – Train ride to Ella – pure deceleration
Today you swap your bike for the train – one of the most beautiful rail routes in the world.
Drive from Nanu Oya to Ella through cloud forests and tea plantations.

Requirements
This trip is aimed at active travelers who want to experience Sri Lanka intensively and consciously. You don’t have to be a professional cyclist – but a good basic level of fitness and enjoyment of exercise are important.
Condition & Fitness
The cycle tours take you along varied routes through flat to hilly terrain.
- Daily stages: approx. 30 to 80 km, depending on the route
- Travel time: approx. 3 to 6 hours per day (including breaks)
- Elevation gain: mostly moderate, individual stages in the highlands a little more challenging
A good basic level of fitness and the ability to be active for several days in a row are required.
Technical requirements
The routes run on:
- asphalt roads with little traffic
- rural roads
- occasionally unpaved sections
The stages are not technically demanding, but riding in traffic requires a certain amount of attention and safety when handling the bike.
Flexibility & support
This trip is designed in such a way that it is feasible for many people:
- An escort vehicle is always nearby
- You can shorten or skip stages if you need a break
- Your luggage is transported – you only travel with a light daypack
The focus is on the shared experience, not on top athletic performance.

Sri Lanka – the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” – combines impressive diversity in a small area: tropical beaches, lush green tea mountains, species-rich national parks and cultural sites dating back thousands of years. So that you are well prepared, you will find all the important information about your trip here.
General information about the country
Sri Lanka is located to the south of India in the Indian Ocean and impresses with its enormous variety of landscapes.
The island is about the size of Bavaria and yet offers a wide variety of climate zones and cultural areas.
The capital is Colombo, while Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the official seat of government.
The population is characterized by an exciting mix of Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim influences – which is also reflected in the culture, religion and cuisine.
Climate & best time to travel
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with warm temperatures of between 25 and 32 degrees all year round.
Particularly exciting: the island has two monsoon seasons that affect different regions:
- West and south coast + highlands: best time to travel from December to April
- East coast: best time to travel from May to September
The months of December to March are particularly ideal for round trips – such as this cycle tour – as many regions are easy to travel through.
In the highlands (e.g. Nuwara Eliya) it can get considerably cooler, especially in the evenings.
Entry & Visa
To enter Sri Lanka you need:
- A passport that is valid for at least 6 months
- A tourist visa (ETA)
- Pay €50 online
The visa can easily be applied for online in advance and is usually valid for 30 days.

Currency & Money
The national currency is the Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR).
- Cash is very important in everyday life, especially in rural areas
- Credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants
- ATMs are widespread
Recommendation:
A combination of credit card and local cash withdrawals makes the most sense.
Language
The official languages are:
- Sinhala
- Tamil
However, English is widely spoken, especially in tourism – communication is possible without any problems.
Culture & Religion
Sri Lanka is strongly influenced by Buddhism, but there are also Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities.
Important information for travelers:
- Shoulders and knees should be covered when visiting temples
- Shoes must be removed in front of temples
- Respectful treatment of religious sites is a matter of course
The people of Sri Lanka are considered to be particularly warm, open and helpful.

Sri Lankan cuisine is aromatic, varied and often spicy.
Typical dishes are:
