Today, the time has come again: Throughout India, the sisters blessly tie a ribbon, the so-called Rakhi, around their brothers’ right wrist. In return, the sisters receive a small gift and lifelong protection.
Not only real brothers, but also cousins, close friends and such men with whom the women prefer only to enter into a sisterly relationship, receive the decorated ribbon.
During the small ceremony, the sister paints a blessing point on her brothers forehead , called Tikka, and circles an oil light in front of her brother.
“Rakscha Bandhan” means “protective connection” and is celebrated on the new moon of the month of shravana and usually falls in August.
