Three Weeks Motorbike Trip Through Zanskar and Ladakh

  • Sport & Abenteuer Reisen
  • Motorrad Reisen

Overview

One of our best motorbike tours in India. It goes over high passes, to beautiful azure mountain lakes and through a fascinating mountain landscape with snow-capped peaks. We will visit Buddhist monasteries and small traditional villages. Road conditions are constantly changing from new, wide and well-developed roads to stony and sandy jeep slopes.

The round tour first takes us from Manali in the Kullu Valley through the remote region of Zanskars on mostly undeveloped roads. This route has only been around since 2021. Previously, this region could only be reached on foot.

From Zanskar it goes to Leh in the Ladakh region. We drive through the Nubra Valley and to Lake Pengong. Then proceed to Tsomoriri and Tsokar Lakes and back to Manali via the famous Manali Leh Highway.

We pass small mountain villages and reach Zanskar Sumdo, a confluence of streams. Now it goes for another 18 km up to the Shingula Pass at over 5300 m! The last km is on a gravel road. On a narrow undeveloped curvy road it goes down to the north side of the pass. Here we allow ourselves our lunch. We cross a river and stop after a few kilometers to admire the mighty Conbo Rangjon rock, which towers steeply in front of us. The next 30 km is relatively flat to the village of Purne, which consists of only three houses. On the way there we pass the first villages and yaks of Zanskars. Travel info

Requirements

The roads are sometimes very well developed, but often just jeep tracks with scree and sand. Often the streets have potholes, every now and then smaller streams have to be crossed. Very good motorcycling skills are a prerequisite for this tour. From time to time, very long distances with up to 8- 10 journey hours are covered, depending on the road situation. The tour takes place at high altitude. This can be accompanied by symptoms of altitude sickness.

Additional Information

To the region

We are located in the middle of the Himalayas in the Federal District of Himachal Pradesh and in Ladakh.

While the green Kullu valley, from where our tour starts, is relatively densely populated by predominantly Hindus, it is getting drier, higher and lonelier in the direction of Lahaul and Ladakh. The people in the high mountain desert are predominantly Buddhist and there are countless ancient monasteries that invite you to visit.

While in the southern area of Himachal it can rain heavily, especially during the monsoon season, rainfall in Lahaul and Ladakh is extremely rare. The temperatures range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day, at night it can get quite cold, even below freezing point.

Dangers

During the tour we are constantly in the mountains at an altitude between 2000 and 6000 meters.

Even if we work with trained guides and take all measures on our tours to counter emergencies, you can never rule out dangers in the mountains. Time and again there can be weather changes, landslides (especially during the monsoon season) or accidents and you should always be aware of this.

Due to climatic conditions or organisational reasons, we reserve the right to change the tours in the suburb as it is safest for all involved.

Altitude and altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is a very important topic that should not be underestimated, especially on our tours in the Indian Himalayas. At altitudes above 3500 m, our body has to slowly get used to the low air pressure, which also causes less oxygen to enter our lungs. The first signs of altitude sickness are headaches, which are accompanied by dizziness, nausea, insomnia and loss of appetite. It becomes problematic when water accumulates in the lungs and brain and edema occurs. Then only the immediate descent to lower altitudes will help. In order to prepare for the heights on our tours, we will either spend a few nights at high altitudes before the tours or slowly ascend during the tours to acclimate ourselves. If we notice that there are problems with our guests (each person is otherwise able to acclimatize, regardless of age, gender and fitness level), it may happen that either the entire tour group or the participant descends/returns with a team. In addition, it makes sense to take an emergency drug for altitude sickness. For this, it is best to consult the pharmacy or the travel doctor. For certain tours we will also have oxygen with us.

Accommodation

During the tour we spend the night in simple, clean, typical 3-star accommodations and tent accommodations in deluxe camps with attached bathrooms, beds and electricity.

Meals are adapted to the local cuisine and mostly vegetarian.
